  • Our approach to

    Ethics & Sustainability

We love our wild, wonderful, natural planet and we want to make sure it’s here to stay. We’re committed to treading lightly on the earth - fewer resources, responsible working practices, less impact. We’re not perfect, but we’re constantly taking steps to improve our impact on the planet and the people who inhabit it.

Here's How we Work...

Thoughtfully Sourced Materials

Our jewellery uses nearly 100% recycled sterling silver, meaning our silver jewellery has normally had a previous life, likely in the form of unwanted jewellery, or unused electronic equipment. Recycled silver is the perfect way to contribute to a circular economy and cut down on our impact on the planet, without compromising the quality and durability of our pieces. Our recycled silver is sourced from a Responsible Jewellery Council accredited supplier.

Our gemstones are thoughtfully sourced by our extended team in India and undergo strict quality control both in Jaipur and in our London studio. The gemstones we use are mostly a ‘by-product’ of the gemstone cutting industry and would otherwise be cast off as waste. They are very small pieces that are cut into shape or tumbled to achieve the finish of the pendant.

Our cultured freshwater pearls are grown beneath the water’s surface, the same way as a natural pearl forms. Although our pearls are farmed, they still have the same properties as natural pearl, with the added benefit of being sustainable. Sourced in Asia, they take around 2 years to grow before they're farmed and harvested. Each pearl is completely one of a kind in shape, size, character and lustre.

Responsible Manufacturing

Our extended team in Jaipur, India is a family run team with over 40 years of experience in jewellery making. All jewellery made by our extended team is crafted in recycled materials and with fair trade ethics.

The factory is certified by Burea Vertias - an organisation which ensures that their assets, products, infrastructure and processes meet standards and regulations in terms of quality, health and safety, environmental protection and social responsibility.

We also work with a Factory in Thailand that is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, adhering to strict ethical, social, human rights and environmental practices.

Reduced Waste

At Decadorn our aim is to never waste a single item of jewellery or jewellery component. We do this by…

  • Using every part of the stone during the cutting of our gemstones.
  • Only buying in small quantities so we very rarely have surplus stock.
  • Carefully designing all of our jewellery so that our stones and components can all be used in multiple ways across our collections.
  • Launching new collections with very limited stock and a small number of stone options, so we can gauge your reaction before widening the collection.
  • Selling through until the last one is sold on the rare occasions where we do have surplus stock, or decide to retire a particular item.
  • Putting the pieces that we design that do not make it into our collections in our sample sales.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Our jewellery uses nearly 100% recycled sterling - cutting carbon emissions by 2/3 compared with mined silver.

Every order made via our website contributes to reforestation and climate repair via Ecologi. So far we’ve contributed to over 2,000 tress being planted - the majority of which have been planted as part of a Mangrove project in Madagascar - capturing up to four times as much carbon per acre than tropical rainforests.

We have appointed a Quality Control team in India & Thailand, which has allowed us to reduced our air travel back and forth from the UK.

Recyclable Packaging

Our packaging is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC certified and/or made from recycled materials:

Pouches
Our Decadorn branded pouches are made from 5oz 100% cotton. The pouch is 100% recyclable but has been designed to be kept and reused to protect your jewellery at home and on-the-go.

Boxes
Most of our jewellery comes in a luxury matchbox style gift box which is made from 40% recycled boxboard and is fully recyclable. These boxes contain a foam insert - this currently the only part of our packaging that is not recyclable but we are working on switching to new recyclable inserts in the near future.

Gift wrap
Our gift wrap is sourced from a local, independent paper marbling studio. All of our gift wrap is FSC certified and 100% recyclable.

Mailing boxes
Our cardboard mailing boxes are made from at least 60% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable. We use 100% recyclable kraft brown paper fragile tape to seal our mailing boxes.

Care and Information Cards
Our care and information cards are made from sustainably sourced FSC certified, environmentally friendly ECF pulp, are 100% recyclable and chlorine free.

Stickers
Our stickers are produced in the UK and are fully recyclable.
