Materials & Jewellery Care

At Decadorn we strive for long-lasting jewellery but we are sensitive to the affordability of our pieces, so we use either sterling Silver, Gold plating or Gold fill to balance longevity with affordability.

Sterling Silver, Gold-plated and Gold-fill jewellery can oxidise when exposed to air, humidity, sweat, perfume, cosmetics or other chemicals and is therefore prone to tarnishing over time. Plating will also wear off with regular use over time and gemstones and pearls can fade or discolour if mistreated. However, if cared for and stored appropriately your jewellery will last longer without tarnishing or discolouring.

We want you to be able to wear and enjoy your Decadorn treasures every day for many years to come. Please read this guide for more information on the materials we use and how we recommend you care for your pieces to ensure their longevity and keep them looking their best.

Whilst we accommodate refunds or replacements on the rare occasions our jewellery has a fault, we do not take responsibility for or replace any jewellery that has clearly not been cared for appropriately as per the recommendations in this guide.

What materials does Decadorn use?

Gold

All of our gold chains are plated with a thick layer of 18ct gold over a brass base. They are plated with a gold thickness of 1/4 microns, making our chains strong and durable.

This plating process is done in small batches, by eye. This does mean that there can be some variation in colour between our chains and other necklace elements. We could mass produce these chains to give more uniformity in colour, but we choose to continue with this hand-dipping process in small batches, on-demand, as it’s less wasteful and ultimately better for the environment. We also love that it makes each piece even more unique and special.

We use 14ct gold fill for our earring fittings. ‘Gold fill’ is an industry standard that legally requires 1/20th, or 5% pure gold by weight. It’s a strictly regulated process that involves pressure bonding multiple layers of solid 14k gold with extreme heat over a core of high-quality jeweller’s brass resulting in a durable gold product.

Our gold charms are plated with 1-micron 18ct gold over a 925 sterling silver base.

Silver

We use recycled 925 sterling Silver for our chains and earring fittings, which is an alloy made of 92.5% pure Silver and 7.5% Copper.

‘Recycled’ means that all our Silver jewellery has had a previous life, likely in the form of unwanted jewellery, or unused electronic and medical equipment. Recycled Silver is the perfect way to contribute to a circular economy and cut down on our impact on the planet, without compromising the quality and durability of our pieces.

Our silver charms are 925 sterling silver.

Gemstones

Our gemstone jewellery is carefully sourced by our extended team in India and undergoes strict quality control both in Jaipur and in our London studio.

We order in small batches, use every part of the stone and use all of our gemstones in multiple ways across different products. This ensures that we minimise wastage during production and in terms of leftover, unwanted stock.

The gemstones we use are mostly a ‘by product’ of the gemstone cutting industry and would otherwise be cast off as waste. They are very small pieces that are cut into shape or tumbled to achieve the finish of the pendant. We use natural raw stones which vary in colour and appearance – which adds to the beauty and uniqueness of each of our pieces.

Most of our gemstones are plated in 1-micron gold or silver onto a brass electro base (they are not solid pieces).

Some gemstones may fade or discolour if exposed frequently to sunlight or come into contact with humidity, sweat, perfumes, cosmetics or other chemicals.

Pearls

Our cultured freshwater pearls are grown beneath the water’s surface, the same way as a natural pearl forms. Although our pearls are farmed, they still have the same properties as natural pearl, with the added benefit of being sustainable. Sourced in Asia, they take around 2 years to grow before they're farmed and harvested. Each pearl is completely one of a kind in shape, size, character and lustre.

Pearls are susceptible to damage if exposed to humidity, sweat, perfumes, cosmetics or other chemicals.

Could the materials you use cause an allergic reaction?

We are as transparent as possible about what is used in our jewellery, however, some skins are more sensitive and may react to anything other than solid Gold or Silver.

We cannot be held responsible for individual allergic reactions to our metals.

If you have any questions please email our care team on customerservices@decadorn.com.

How should I store my Decadorn jewellery?

When not being worn your Decadorn jewellery should be stored in a cool, dark place.

Avoid leaving your jewellery in direct sunlight or in any place where it could be exposed to humidity (for example the bathroom) or chemicals.

To help prevent your necklaces from getting tangled, fasten the chains before storing them.

We recommend storing your items individually so that they do not rub together, scratch or tangle. Particular care should be taken with gemstones to ensure that they do not rub together when stored. All of our jewellery comes in a Decadorn branded pouch or box - both are perfect for storing each item individually when not being worn.

What precautions do I need to take when wearing my Decadorn jewellery?

Sterling Silver, Gold-plated and Gold-fill jewellery can oxidise when exposed to air, humidity, sweat, perfume, cosmetics or other chemicals and is therefore prone to tarnishing over time.

In order to ensure the longevity of your Decadorn pieces we recommend the following precautions:

  • Avoid contact with water. Remove your jewellery prior to showering, bathing and swimming.
  • Avoid contact with sweat. Remove your jewellery prior to exercising.
  • Avoid contact with hand sanitiser, make-up, perfume, suncream, hair and body care products. Put your jewellery on once any moisturisers, suncream and perfume have fully absorbed into the skin and do not apply while wearing your jewellery. Your jewellery should be the last thing you put in the morning and the first thing you take off at night.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. We recommend removing jewellery while sunbathing and not leaving your jewellery in direct sunlight when not being worn.
  • Avoid sleeping in your jewellery.
  • We want you to enjoy your jewellery while on holiday, but we recommend taking them off while sunbathing, enjoying the beach or swimming in the pool or sea.
  • Remove your jewellery at any time where it could get knocked, scratched, caught or otherwise damaged, for example during sport or if you have a particularly physical job.

How should I clean my Decadorn jewellery?

All of our jewellery can be cleaned with a soft, non-abrasive and lint-free cloth.

Our 925 sterling silver jewellery can be cleaned in a silver cleaning solution or with a Silver cloth.

If you use a silver cleaning solution you must remember to remove the gemstone beforehand and ensure your jewellery is fully dried afterwards with a soft, non-abrasive and lint-free cloth.

Don’t use harsh chemicals when cleaning your Decadorn jewellery as these may cause tarnishing of the metal or fading/discolouration of the gemstones. We do not recommend the use of any jewellery polishing cloths which have inbuilt cleaners or polishing agents.
