Why we choose real materials

Waterproof, tarnish-free, wear-it-forever jewellery is everywhere right now. We've chosen a different path.

We make jewellery from real materials, designed to be worn, cared for and kept. Jewellery doesn't need to stay exactly the same forever to be good. Some of the most beautiful pieces are the ones that show a little life.

Real metal. Real gemstones.

At Decadorn, we use real gemstones, never acrylic or resin. Every stone has its own natural colour, pattern, inclusions and character. No two are alike, and that's part of what makes them special.

From Labradorite and Moonstone to Dalmatian Jasper, Tiger Eye and Red Jasper, each one was formed by natural geological processes over time. They're materials with their own story, not something made to look like a stone.

Our metals are real too: sterling silver, gold-filled components and gold-plated brass, depending on the piece. We think it's important to be open about what your jewellery is made from.

Why we don't promise "tarnish-free"

Silver tarnishes. That's simply what silver does. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, and over time it reacts with sulphur, moisture and other things in the air, which creates a darker surface layer. This is a natural process, not a sign of poor quality.

So rather than promising your jewellery will never change, we'd rather be honest about how real metal wears and how to look after it.

Think of it like the clothes you love

Metals wear the way fabrics do. Solid gold is like cashmere. It's beautiful, it lasts and it barely changes, but it comes with a price tag to match.

Sterling silver is like your favourite jeans. It changes with wear, softens and darkens, and develops a character all its own. A quick clean brings it back.

Gold-plated pieces are like a favourite cotton shirt. They give you the look you love at a lower price, but with time and wear the colour can gently fade, especially at the cuffs and collar, or in jewellery terms, wherever it rubs.

None of this means something has gone wrong. A patina or a softly faded finish is simply what happens to real metal that's worn and loved. We choose silver, gold-fill and gold plate so our pieces stay affordable, and we'll always be honest about which is which.

If a plated part on your Decadorn piece wears, get in touch and we'll replace it with gold-fill, which has a much thicker layer of gold and is far more hard-wearing.

Look after it and it will last

Take your jewellery off before showering, swimming or exercising, and put it on after perfume and moisturiser have dried. Store it somewhere dry, like your Decadorn cotton pouch, and keep pieces separate so they don't scratch each other.

Clean all your jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth. For sterling silver, a gentle polish with a silver cloth will bring back the shine. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach and chlorine, which speed up tarnishing. And don't worry about a little tarnish, because it can usually be cleaned away.

Made to be kept

Silver and gold are incredibly long-lasting. Precious metals can be recovered and used again, and silver can be recycled over and over without losing its qualities.

That's what we love about real materials. A piece can be repaired, refreshed, passed on or, one day, become part of something completely new.

A little less waste

We make our jewellery by hand, in small batches, so we don't overproduce stock. Every piece is handmade, hand-finished and quality-checked in our Bath studio.

Our packaging is (almost entirely) plastic-free. We're still working on a few small things, like sticky tape.

We don't claim to have everything figured out, but we believe that being thoughtful about what we make, what we make it from and how long it lasts is a good place to start.

Buy less. Love it longer.

For us, sustainability isn't about promising jewellery will never change. It's about choosing materials with real value, making pieces you'll wear for years, and looking after the things you already love.
